Doctoral Students
isginf provides IT services and support to the research groups of the
Department of Computer Science.
As doctoral student you have access to the IT infrastructure of the department and your research group. The extent to which each group uses the services provided by
isginf for this varies. Your
IT Coordinator will give you an introduction to the IT infrastructure used by your group.
Your IT Coordinator
Every research group has an
IT Coordinator (
ITC) who is the primary contact for IT related questions and issues for all members of the group and who is familiar with your groups IT infrastructure and the policies governing its usage. Your
ITC is the interface between your group and
isginf and can (through
isginf):
- request configuration of the network sockets in each room
- make changes to DNS and DHCP
- purchase hardware and software
- manage your user account for your group
isginf Service Desk
If your
ITC is not available you can
contact isginf directly. Send us a mail to
support@inf.ethz.ch, call us on +41 44 632 7210 (internal 27210) or come to our
service desk in CAB E 61.1 during our opening hours (Monday to Friday, 9:30-11:30 and 13:30-16:30). Mail to
support@inf.ethz.ch goes to our
ticketing system and can also be viewed by your
ITC.
Our Services
All our services are documented in
service catalog on our website. Most services are provided free of charge. For help regarding a service or the infrastructure you can consult the
help section.
On our web page we regularly publish news regarding issues, security or other events. You can also subscribe to these news trough
our RSS news channel.
Getting Started
An
nethz account is required to use the IT infrastructure (computers, network, mail, etc.) at ETH Zurich. Your new login and the initial password for all
nethz services is sent to you via postal mail. Former guests or students will keep their existing
nethz accounts.
Once you have that your
ITC will create your user account used for the IT infrastructure of the group. You can then:
Depending on the group you work in, you will get additional services like:
Before Leaving
When you leave ETH Zurich, please do not leave a mess behind:
- Delete old mails from the ETH e-mail server and move mails that you want to keep to your private e-mail mailbox
- Reduce the amount of data on your personal home page
- Delete unwanted data stored on workstations, laptops, file servers etc. and transfer any data that must be kept to somebody else in your group
- Return software licenses to your ITC
Keeping Your nethz Account
Your
nethz account will be automatically deleted three months after your employment. It is up to your professor and
ITC to extend it as long as reasonable.
Keeping Mail and Personal Home Page
Once you leave can have a permanent forward of mail going to your D-INFK mail addresses for a
maximum of three years. You can set this forward yourself on
http://password.ethz.ch ("meine Services"
> "Mailbox").
You can also keep your personal home page for a
maximum of three years. You will keep your
nethz account with only the
mail and
nethz services during this time. The account is usually extended for a year and the extension must be renewed every year.
You
must actively read the mails sent to your D-INFK mail addresses. When you receive mails from
nethz informing you of the impending deletion of your
nethz account and services you must react on your own and contact
your IT Coordinator or isginf to extend your
nethz account again. If you fail to do so, your mail forward and personal home page will be deleted.
