Network
The network of ETH Zurich, both WLAN and wired network, are provided and maintained by
IT Services of ETH Zurich (
ITS).
Wireless LAN
The
VPN service of your
nethz user account grants you access to the
wireless LAN of ETH Zurich.
The simplest way to connect to the WLAN of ETH Zurich is to connect to the SSID
public and either use the
landing page or VPN as described above.
Landing Page
The
landing page is automatically shown in the web browser when connecting to a public network and accessing an external website without authenticating.
Enter your
nethz login and
VPN service password to authenticate and your network connection is ready to use.
If you need the connection for something other then browsing the web (e.g. ssh connection, access to file services) you still need to open a browser to go to the landing page and authenticate to get a working connection.
VPN
The use of
VPN is recommended when connecting from an insecure place (WLAN, public docking, home network, internet, public WLAN acess point, etc.).
VPN client software for many operating systems that is already configured for ETH Zurich can be downloaded from
here (authentication with
nethz login and password required).
Hot Spots / WiFi off-campus
Information about
- surfing from Swiss universities
- off-campus surfing
- surfing from universities worldwide (EDUROAM)
can be found under
Hot Spots / WiFi off-campus.
Public Docking
Network plugs marked
NETNG Docking with an RJ45 cable already plugged in can be found in various seminar rooms.
To connect to these configure the network adapter in your computer to
DHCP. To complete the connection you either have to use the
landing page or VPN as described above.
Wired Network in Offices
The UTP plugs in each office are both used for phones and network. Contact your
IT Coordinator (
ITC) to configure the UTP plugs in your office.
DNS and DHCP Configuration
To connect a device to the network of your group it must obtain a fixed IP in the ETH DNS and is registered on the DHCP server. Contact your
ITC if you need to register a new device.
Firewall
All networks of the
D-INFK are behind a firewall. Please ask your
ITC for details on the firewall rules for your networks.
The firewall applies to network connections from outside ETH as well as from the public docking and WLAN networks.
