The following figure shows the system configuration of the cluster:
The EMC Symmetrix DMX-3 owned by IT Services of ETH Zurich is used to store all file systems. A cluster of Red Hat Enterprise Server 4 systems in an active-active configuration mount the file systems over SAN and export them via NFS and Samba. Clients access these servers using service IPs.
Over night all data are copied to the snapshot server. Several copies are kept on the server. Users have access to these snapshots to restore files from the snapshots.
Backup is done over SAN to the NetBackup backup system located at ETH Hönggerberg. Backups are done efficiently through a virtual tape library which first caches backup data streams on disk before sending them to tape.
