Mail sometimes arrives with long delay

Mails that suspiciously look like phishing mails are automatically sorted into a special mail queue. This queue is only checked periodically during office hours by ITS staff. Regular mails are manually released.

For urgent mails that you need to get through please contact our service desk or the ITS service desk.

I cannot send mail when not at ETH

Depending where you are, port 25 that is needed to send mail may be blocked by the local firewall for safety. In this case starting VPN solved the issue.

Another solution would be to switch to port 587 (submission), which most likely will not be blocked.

Windows: Outlook 365 fragt ununterbrochen nach Credentials / Outlook 365 keeps asking for credentials

Es gibt momentan ein Problem mit Outlook 356 (und Outlook 2016 “click to run”) an der ETHZ. Nach dem erfolgreichen Login, fragt Outlook ununterbrochen nach Credentials.

  • Wann: Das Problem tritt auf ungefähr seit Montag dem 11. November.
  • Was: Outlook 365 (und Outlook 2016 “click to run”) fragt unablässig nach den Logininformationen.
  • Beschreibung:

Ende letzten Jahres hat MS in Outlook 2016 («click to run») und Outlook 365 das Autodiscover Verhalten so verändert, dass immer zuerst nach einem Autodiscover Eintrag in der Office 365 Cloud gesucht wird. Wenn im Outlook keine Office 365 Mailbox verwendet wird, verzögert dies zwar den Login in die ETH Mailbox etwas, hat ansonsten aber keinerlei nachteilige Folgen. Seit ungefähr Montag dem 11. November häufen sich bei uns die Meldungen, dass Outlook nach dem Login unablässig nach Logininformationen fragt. Nach einigen Analysen, haben wir festgestellt, dass folgender Registry-Key das Verhalten wieder korrigiert:

There is currently a problem with Outlook 365 (and Outlook 2016 “click to run”) at ETHZ. After a successful login, Outlook continuously asks for credentials.

  • When: The problem appeared around Monday the 11th of November.
  • Was: Outlook 365 (and Outlook 2016 “click to run”) constantly requests login information.
  • Beschreibung:

At the end of last year MS changed the autodiscover behavior in Outlook 365 and Outlook 2016 ("click to run") so that it always starts with a search for an autodiscover entry in the Office 365 cloud. If no Office 365 mailbox is used in Outlook, this will delay the login to the ETH mailbox somewhat, but will otherwise has no negative consequences. Since about Monday the 11th of November we have seen received numerous tickets saying that Outlook continuously asks for login information after successful login. After some analysis, we found out that the following registry key will corrects the behavior:
