Thunderbird
The following examples are based on a fictive user account with user name hmuster, first name Hans and last name Muster. Please replace all occurrences in text that you copy with your real email account information. Students must also change
inf.ethz.ch to student.ethz.ch.
Setup
This example is for Thunderbird 45.2.0 when you start it for the first time.
Type in your Name and click on Skip this and use my existing email.
Type in your email address and ETH password for email, check Remember password and click on Manual config.
Fill in your mail server, protocol and password type information:
- Incoming: IMAP,
mail.ethz.ch,993, SSL/TLS, Normal Password - Outgoing: SMTP,
mail.ethz.ch,587, STARTTLS, Normal Password - Username: your ETH user name for both Incoming and Outgoing, or ETH user name@d.ethz.ch
Additional Recommended Settings
The following settings are also recommended. Open the Account Settings dialog to make the changes.
Select the Server Settings pane of the account and change:

- Change Check for new messages every to
15minutes or more.
- Change Check for new messages every to
- Message storage
- Check Clean up ("Expunge") Inbox on Exit
Select the Synchronize & Storage pane of the account and change:
- Message Synchronizing
- Uncheck Keep messages for this account on this computer.
Select the Junk Settings pane of the account and change:
- Destination and Retentiond
- Check Move new junk messages to:.
Check Enable adaptive junk filter logging.
